Create an Instructional Framework

Select a framework that will measure student learning outcomes resulting from content delivery, sequence and resources along with instructional methods and activities. A framework ensures that each student experiences a quality educational program, and has a focused course of study that can be directly related to performance measurements.

The framework design enables effective curricular dialogues, collaborative decision making, focused instructional practices, along with coverage of competency areas and content standards that develop learning objectives.

Things to consider when creating the framework:

  • Keep it simple to follow and understand at a glance
  • Use 4 or less Main Categories in the Framework
  • Do not exceed 3 sub-level categories
  • Achieve adoption through training of faculty

Develop Exam Blueprints

Once you define the learning objectives and types of questions for the exams in your framework, you can begin creating your exam blueprint.  An exam blueprint is a table illustrating the relative importance placed on each item that has been identified in the framework.  The blueprint ensures that desired learning outcomes are measured by assessing all required topics.

The blueprint can be used as a guide to help answer some of these questions when developing an exam:

  • To what extent does this exam evaluate the knowledge of the exam taker?
  • Do any questions require interpretation of pictorial material?
  • How many questions require simple recall of facts?
  • How many questions require the integration of information to draw conclusions?

Writing and Tagging Question Items

Begin to write and tag each question with at least one of the categories from the framework. In ExamSoft, this can be accomplished while entering question items or after an exam has been created.

ExamSoft gives you flexibility to add categories years after an exam has been administered and still leverage the reporting and analytics, as the tagging is retroactive.

Analyze Performance of  Learning Outcomes for each Assessment & by Exam Taker

Using the Category Report from ExamSoft’s report tab, you can review exam taker performance during a particular exam.

The categories tagged from the framework are grouped together for clarity and easy reference with corresponding statistical measures of how those question types performed.

Share Results with Exam Takers

Providing timely, personalized feedback enables students to clearly identify their own strengths and areas of necessary improvement.  ExamSoft gives you several options for releasing results to students that facilitate immediate exam review sessions to promote engaged learning from embedded instructor rationale, and includes details of their individual performance summary.
