Disabling the Touch Bar on a MacBook Pro

January 20, 2017 Rex McWilliams

Exam Administrators will want to ensure that the newest feature included with some MacBook Pro's is disabled before a student begins their exam. By default, the Touch Bar will show predictive text depending on what the student is typing, compromising exam integrity.

How to Disable the Feature

Proctors should be looking for 2 models of the MacBook Pro; a 13-inch, and a 15-inch model. As of January 20th, 2017, both models only come in two colors; Space Gray, and Silver.

From the Dock, open System Preferences.

Double-click Keyboard.

Open the drop-down menu for "Touch Bar shows", and select Expanded Control Strip.

Open the drop-down menu for "Press Fn key to" and select Show F1, F2, etc. Keys.

The Touch Bar will now display normal computer settings, such as volume, brightness, and the function keys when pressing the Fn button.

The exam taker can now launch SofTest and begin their secure exam.
