Manually Preparing your Word, RTF, or TXT File for Import

  1. Each question must be assigned a number, followed by a "." or ")". The importer will not recognize a question if it is not numbered.
  2. To add rationale, enter the tilde "~" key before the question's rationale. The rationale will need to be entered after the question text on the line below.

3. Multiple Choice questions (with or without multiple answers) need to be formatted as follows:

  • Enter the question text following the number.
  • List as many answer choices as you wish.
  • Denote correct answer questions with an asterisk ("*") before the answer choice selection. Example: *b. L1 - L5
  • For multiple correct answers, denote the accepted answers with an asterisk before each answer choice selection.

4.  True / False questions need to be formatted as follows:

  • Enter the question text following the number.
  • Enter true or false in answer choice A or B.
  • Denote correct answer questions with an asterisk ("*") before the answer choice selection. Example: *a. True

5. Fill in the blank questions can be formatted in a number of ways:

  • Using either "_1_", "a", "[1]", "[a]", or "[A]", you can indicate the first blank within the question text.
  • For multiple blanks, you may use the next logical number or letter in sequence
  • Answer choice A (or a) will be the accepted answer(s) for the first blank.
  • To input more than one accepted answer for a single blank, separate each accepted answer choice by a "|" (bar). Note, do not input a space before or after the text and the "|".

5. Essay questions will need to be formatted from the Import Validation page.

  • Enter the question text following the number.
  • Enter any rationale.
  • When viewing the question within the Import Validation page, you need to select all text within the field, and choose Essay from the choices above.

6. Importing Inline Images

  • If you wish to include images within your import file, simply add them anywhere within your import file. We recommend placing such images at the end of your file.
  • At this time, we only support the importing of inline images in .gif, .jpg, .jpeg, or .png formats

  • If any mistakes were made during the import, the Original Highlighted Text box will show all text associated with this question. From here, you may copy and paste any corrections to the question text.

7. When saving your file, please select one of the following file formats: .doc, .docx, .rtf, .txt, or .pdf.
