Unlinked vs. Linked Assessments - New Portal Beta

Unlinked Assessments

It is best to create an unlinked assessment when there are minor changes that need to be made to a specific assessment. When an assessment is unlinked, it creates a separate Assessment ID. The questions and categories included will continue to provide statistical and performance data; however, they will be separated from previous assessments. The information cannot be combined with other results for comparison. In order to create an unlinked assessment:

1) Select the assessment from the Assessments sub-tab of your course.

2) Select the More.. drop-down, then Duplicate.

3) Choose Unlinked Assessment.

4) Being typing the Course to post the assessment to and click Continue.

5) Any new unlinked assessments will copy over the same Assessment Title with the words (Duplicate) printed afterwards, but Users can make changes as needed, including:

  • Assessment Title
  • Questions
  • Scoring
  • Securing Options
  • Assessment Options to Enable
  • Assessment Attachments
  • Font Overrides

6) Once you are finished making any necessary changes, navigate to the Post Settings sub-tab in order to Save or Finalize the assessment.

Things to consider when creating Unlinked Assessments:

  • An unlinked assessment is a brand new assessment.
  • Student and Category performances can still be tracked.
  • Data from unlinked assessments cannot be combined into a single report.

Linked Assessments

It is best to link an assessment when setting up the same assessment for the same course, or when creating a make-up assessment for a student. A linked assessment maintains the same Assessment ID. Each posting can have its own password, download start and end dates, along with separate email reminders. Each linked assessment will permit Users to compile the data from all students. Linking assessments allows you to review their academic progress on the same assessment AND evaluate the statistical data on item and category performance on the same assessment. In order to link assessments:

1) Select the assessment from the Assessments sub-tab of your course.

2) Select the More.. drop-down, then Duplicate.

3) Choose Linked Assessment.

4) All linked assessments for the particular assessment can now be viewed from the provided drop-down window. Any new linked assessments will copy over the same Assessment Title with the words (Duplicate) printed afterwards, as shown below:

5) Navigate to the Post Settings sub-tab and enter the new posting information.

6) Once you are finished making any changes, either choose to Save or Finalize the assessment.

Things to consider when creating Linked Assessments:

  • A linked assessment is an exact copy of the original assessment.
  • At this time, Linked assessments can only be posted to the same course.
  • No part of the assessment (such as questions or scoring) can be altered, only the posting parameters (such as download dates and exam password).
  • Linked assessments can be changed to unlinked assessments, if Enable Editing is chosen before posting the assessment.

For more information on linked assessments, view our Creating a Linked Assessment resource guide.
